onslow Posted September 12, 2007 Report Posted September 12, 2007 Hi i have just bought a r reg galaxy tdi and its great except for one thing!!There is a tapping noise oon tickoover and when ure driving i thought it could be a noisy tappet, but it seems louder when you go underneaath the car, when your at the front of the car u can still hear it but not as loud, can anyone help me?the noise is sort of like a tapping tingly noise almost sounds hollow?PLEASE HELP!!! THANKS. Quote
mumof4 Posted September 12, 2007 Report Posted September 12, 2007 Check the exhaust pipes..see if there is anything tapping against the exhaust when the car is running...check the whole thing....When the car is cold..get underneath and have a good look all along and see if the exhaust moves at all. onslow Posted September 12, 2007 Author Report Posted September 12, 2007 Thanks for the advice ill have a look,it also seems louder when uree inside the car?it gets faster the more you rev up the engine? Quote
mumof4 Posted September 12, 2007 Report Posted September 12, 2007 sounds a bit like my veccy did..was the down pipe not quite aligned on mine and had to be shifted across an inch. it could be a loose heat shield......check all the way along the exhaust system from the very front under the car to the very end at the rear..check it when the car is cold is a hot exhaust burns as i found out.try moving the exhaust system...does it touch anything if it does??..check everything in the vicinity..i can only advise on how i checked my veccy as i never checked the exhaust system on the Gal. you can try getting the car up on ramps and putting her on idle and have a look under to see if you can identify where it is coming from..get someone to rev it aswell whilst you are under..,but i wouldnt touch anything if you do this and please take all safety precautions! this is all what i would do if it were my gal. is it def coming from underneath??..mind you did say it was quieter at the front so cant be engine bay related. seatkid Posted September 12, 2007 Report Posted September 12, 2007 Does the noise go when you press the clutch in? In that case its the release bearing. It might be the vacuum pump which is mechanically driven - located at the front of the engine near the gearbox end. or.... Quote
onslow Posted September 13, 2007 Author Report Posted September 13, 2007 It does'nt go when you press the clutch in,ill have a listen to the pump, any more ideas?all welcome Quote
mumof4 Posted September 13, 2007 Report Posted September 13, 2007 I still think somethings knocking...start simple then work up. Quote
tim-spam Posted September 13, 2007 Report Posted September 13, 2007 Hydraulic tappet collapsing? If so, replace all 8 - fairly cheap to buy from Eurocarparts or GSF, and reasonably easy to replace, although the cam has to be removed to do it. Quote
onslow Posted September 13, 2007 Author Report Posted September 13, 2007 ok,do you haveto take the cam belt off? Quote
onslow Posted September 13, 2007 Author Report Posted September 13, 2007 Right done a bit more investigating,i took rocker cover off didnt really no wat i was looking at but i couldnt see anything broken or worn? The noise seems to be worse when you stand at the side of the car or get underneath, almost seems as though its coming from the back of the engine or bottom? Its like a tapping noise but has a hollow sound to it,you the the sound u get when something is loose and vibrating, but deff not anything loose the tap still there but just trying to explain what sort of noise it is(but not doing very well lol) Quote
mumof4 Posted September 13, 2007 Report Posted September 13, 2007 Did you check the heat shields??check to see if the exhaust moved whilst car is revved??..did you check the bolts that hold the exhaust on??..did you check everything else was secure under the car??..does it sound the same on both sides or louder stood at one side??..have you checked the spare wheel??the winch?? Quote
onslow Posted September 14, 2007 Author Report Posted September 14, 2007 I have checked everything deffanately coming from engine bay somewhere? Quote
seatkid Posted September 18, 2007 Report Posted September 18, 2007 other ideas? something loose..., trim, intercooler pipes, engine cover, filter box, roll restrictor.....start grabbing bits around and try rocking the engine while running (not you...the engine  ) Could be the dreaded DMF! . Quote
onslow Posted September 18, 2007 Author Report Posted September 18, 2007 thanks ill have a go tomorrow, but it seems the faster the engine is running the faster the tap is like i said seems t be worse inside the car and if you stand at the side, could it be a tensioner noise?as i have noticed that the drive belt tenioner is vibrating a lot p.s wats dmf,and is there anywhere on this site that tells you how to replace tappets many thanks. mumof4 Posted September 19, 2007 Report Posted September 19, 2007 DMF Dual Mass Flywheel. If that goes poof..could mean a new clutch at the same time. Unless you meant something else SK?? Quote

manda Posted September 23, 2007 Report Posted September 23, 2007 Hi just looking on here for a problem that i have and i had the same as you i think (tapping noise) and my alternator belt was slightly frayed which was flapping against engine. Hope this helps! Quote
onslow Posted September 28, 2007 Author Report Posted September 28, 2007 Hi thanks ill check that aswell, its starting to get annoying now done a search on here and cant find anyone who has had the same problem, the sound almost sounds like something is spininng but when it is its catching on something, sounds very hollow and almost tingly i have looked over all the car and it seems worse when you are either inside the car at the side of it or underneath? The only things i can find is the drive belt tensioner is vibrating(heard they are a common fault) and the turbo makes a wooshing noise as though its leaking but i think this is normal unless any one can tell me different its very loud wen ure in the car? colud it be the tensioner?? GETTING DESPERATE NOW LOL!! Quote
JimmyT Posted October 17, 2007 Report Posted October 17, 2007 Just another thought on this one. It could be the pre tenisnor alongside the alternator .They normally only noisy At Idle. but IF IT IS BADLY WORN it may be the problem Quote
